Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is pleased to announce the official confirmation of Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu (PhD) as the substantive Government Statistician. The ceremony for swearing in was conducted by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House. This confirmation marks a significant milestone following Dr. Iddrisu’s earlier appointment in acting capacity in April 2025.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Iddrisu laid out an ambitious roadmap for GSS, pledging to transform the institution into a “world-class, technology-driven, agile, and trusted” entity that anchors Ghana’s development on data and evidence.
“I accept this appointment not merely as an office, but as a solemn and sacred call to national duty—a call to lead the charge in placing data and evidence at the heart of governance and national transformation,” he stated.
Dr. Iddrisu articulated a vision to modernize and reposition GSS as a responsive, decentralized, and policy-aligned national statistical system. He emphasized the need for regular rebasing of GDP and CPI to reduce data lags and enhance accuracy, along with plans to publish district-level inflation rates and regional GDP to support inclusive and localized development.
As part of GSS’s evolving mandate, he announced the production of monthly economic trackers, more frequent labour market statistics, and the development of real-time data dashboards to support evidence-based decision-making across all levels of government.
Calling for stronger partnerships across sectors, Dr. Iddrisu affirmed GSS’s central role in national development. He stated, “Together, let us build a data-driven Ghana, where evidence shapes policy, empowers communities, and unlocks opportunities for every citizen.”
With support from the Presidency, the Ministry of Finance, and a wide network of national and international partners, Dr. Iddrisu expressed confidence in GSS’s capacity to become a continental leader in statistical excellence.
